Update after returning from Shediac Canada

Well, while we had a great time over the entire trip, we wanted to share the real world “adventure” stories. No one got hurt or sick, but we did have a minor fender bender with a car wash, and the Canada Ocean Surf RV Park in Shediac ( pronounced
“shed”-“yack” ) blew up our power transfer switch. We had to rewire our camper every time we pulled into a campground, and rewire it again when we left, so we could run the generator and power the coach appliances while we drive.

We had a great time in Gettysburg, PA, New York City, Plymouth MA, Saco, Kennebunkport, Ogunquit, and Bangor Maine, several weeks before getting into Canada. We were able to answer the rapid fire questions from Canadian Customs to cross the border. However, our friends were not so lucky. I am convinced that if they can trip you up with rapid fire confusing questions, then they will inspect you. If you remain calm, and confident in your SHORT, SIMPLE, and DIRECT answers and don’t show any kind of confusion or hesitation. Know where you are going, and areas you will visit, how long you’re staying and why you are coming in to Canada ( Always say “Vacation” )

We saw the beautiful areas of Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Lunenburg, and Peggy’s Cove. They were all worth a whole day each, but we did Peggy’s Cove and Lunenburg all in one long drive day. We wish we would have spent a whole day in Lunenburg now that we have had the experience and would give that advice to anyone who is planning to go to those areas. Peggy’s Cove is definitely beautiful, but doesn’t take long to visit because that is pretty much the whole adventure is taking photos of the lighthouse.

Please search Youtube for our RVacationer Channel, subscribe and like our videos if you feel so inclined. We are not making any money, just doing this as a hobby and hoping we can inspire, educate, or possibly entertain anyone who enjoys the life style of RV Adventuring.

Ready for our 2019 big trip to Canada from Alabama

We have done everything we can think of to prepare for our big trip this year. Passports, serviced the rig, stocked up on bottled waters, and travel foods. We have our reservations made at all the points of interest and some of the way-points where we will be bedding down each night between “base camps”.

Our style is to either stay at a Walmart, Cabela’s, or a big rig truck stop for way-points, but this year we are traveling with another couple and felt it would be better to take shorter drive times, and longer rest periods so we have campgrounds reserved even for our rest-stop overnight stays.

Our base camps will include Gettysburg, which will include a bus trip to D.C. Then we move on to New York City North for a few nights. After that we will stay a week in the Plymouth/Boston/ Cape-Cod area of Massachusetts to soak in the history that we missed on our first shorter trip to that area. We do know that we will be eating clam chowder at Isaac’s again ;-). When we finish up in Plymouth, we will move through a 2-3 night stay at each of Portland, Bar Harbor, Bangor, before leaving the U.S. and staying on the North Shore beach in New Brunswick where we will drive to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

Stay tuned for updates, photos, and you-tube videos to come during the month of June and July.

Shake down trip 2019

Happy Weekend ! We finally were able to find a sunny day that wasn’t 20 degrees to get the motorhome out and drive to our favorite local spot by the lake. It is mid April and we have been wanting to get out and get bugs on the windshield since last November :-).

We use the “geo method” to maintain our black and gray tanks so we got that all setup and washed and cleaned the rig inside and out. I drove the rig to a truck stop that we have used for years and had the engine serviced last month and tires checked.

We have tested everything we can think of and “so far – so good”. Water Heater works, no plumbing leaks, TV, Internet wi-fi extender works, refrigerator, freezer, stove top, microwave, leveling system, and my personal favorites, the lawn chairs and snack tray works too 😉

We hope everyone has a wonderful, safe, and exciting adventure this season. Who knows, maybe we will cross paths on our journeys.

Safe travels

Checking out New Campgrounds

Norma has been off work for “Spring Break” and we haven’t been able to do much, but Saturday we will head out to Chattanooga. We just need to get out of the house and thought a short drive might be a good break. There are several campgrounds in the area that we want to drive through to see if they fit our needs and aren’t too expensive.

We made the trip to Chattanooga on Saturday and had the best weather we’ve had all year. We went to the Chattanooga Choo Choo which is a hotel that uses train cars as rooms. Also other businesses operate out of the train cars as well. After we ate lunch at the Frothy Monkey coffee shop, we went out back to walk around the train depot styled court yard and took some photos and video. A Wonderful couple stopped and offered to take a photo of the 4 of us. We humbly accepted and as we talked, they were from Peggy’s Cove Nova Scotia which is our Summer Vacation destination. We have a great time getting to know them and it all happened as if it were fate or destiny.

Getting the RV serviced and ready to go

We just had to get the RV ready with the weather in the upper 50’s and low 60’s and the sun shining on us for several days now. The first time this year we’ve had descent weather to get out and do anything.

We normally use the Cummins Service Center in Birmingham to do our service work when we are about to go on a long cross country trip. This year they were short handed and didn’t think they could get to us without us leaving it there for a couple of weeks while they work us in. I don’t like leaving my motorhome unattended and unmonitored for any length of time. So, this year we used Wilks Tire and Battery which has 6 bays for big rigs, and they were able to get to us the next day after I called. They did all the oil, filters, fuel filters, and the generator, checked the tire pressure and the air filter and all the grease fittings. They had a nice truckers lounge for us to hang out in while they worked on the rig.

We got home and did a little rewiring of the towed brake and turn signals. Last year we pulled the tow vehicle back to North Alabama from Gulf Shores beach without tail blinkers and brakes. Now we have that fixed and are ready to go north to Canada in June of this year (2019). We have several stops and sight seeing tours lined up already. Reservations are made and we are just waiting on the calendar to change 🙂

Leaving to get service work done !

Getting Ready

Oh my goodness here it is the middle of March and it’s less than three months until we leave for our summer vacation. We are planning to leave at the end of May and come back the end of June. There are lots of preparations to make before leaving day.

We have been cleaning out bays, cabinets, and drawers getting everything ready to leave. I bought some new organization products to make our lives easier. Wayne will be taking the motorhome tomorrow to get it serviced to make sure all is well. We already fueled up and filled it up the propane. Then we will need to give the RV a good bath. Then all we should have to do is pack clothes and food and head out on the road.

We would love for everyone to follow us on this trip. Our major stops will be: Gettysburg, Pennsylvania – Washington D. C. – New York City – Plymouth, Massachusettes – Cape Cod, Massachusettes – Saco, Maine – Bar Harbor, Maine – Shediac Parish, New Brunswick, Canada – Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada – Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Some of these places we have been before and loved, and some are new places to explore. Get ready for May and June, because I can’t wait.

If you’ve been to some of these places and have some favorite things to do, some beaches that were outstanding, or some delicious places to eat let us know in the comments.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN!!!!!!!!

Get to know us better

We have added a new youtube video introducing ourselves to the RV world. We have had decades of experience doing multiple stop, long distance, cross country trips. Everything from a pop-up from Alabama to California, to the latest RV being a 40 foot Diesel flat towing a Honda Civic. We thought we would jump into the modern world and share our memories, trips, adventures, and yes, breakdowns, and highway shutdowns due to toll booth problems. ( story later – stay tuned ).

Catch the youtube channel RVacationer here for the latest updates and photos and video footage to come.

Canada trip plans firmed up

We, along with our friends will be traveling to Nova Scotia this summer. We have finally made all the reservations there and back. We plan to be gone about 5 weeks. I will be working online some during the trip. Even though I am semi-retired and only work part time, I still need to keep in touch with things at work. I will probably work an hour or two each day to stay caught up with emails, and reply as needed to anything urgent.

Question of the day

Have you been to Prince Edward Island, Cabot Trail Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick Canada? If so, please leave a comment of your opinion, and things on your “must see” list. Thanks,

Be safe, and see you on the road.

Days Gone By

We have always loved to travel. When the kids were little we drug them all over the country. It was so much fun. There was always a new adventure.

Our Steven was probably 12 years old, and our Cynthia was probably 8 years old the year we decided to go out west. The plant that we both worked had a two week shut down every summer. So we were going to pull our pop-up camper out west to the Grand Canyon.

Everyone was so excited. We did our research and KOA campgrounds were the place to stay. The kids loved them because they always had a swimming pool and a playground. We loved them because they always had something cooking in the crock pot for supper every night.

Our first memorable stop was in Arkansas. We never knew that Arkansas had rice fields. This was a pleasant surprise until it started getting dark and the giant mosquitoes came out of the rice fields (which surrounded us) to feast on us. HAHA!

We enjoyed traveling through Texas, but my goodness we didn’t think we would ever get to the other side.

Traveling through New Mexico we rode a tram up the Sandia Peak in Albquerque. It was so beautiful and it seemed like you could see forever. I especially loved the stucco houses which is not something we see very often in Alabama.

We then traveled on to Arizona to stay at the Grand Canyon. This is one of our favorite spots. The colors were magnificient, because at different times of the day it looked different according to how much sun shine you had. There is one spot called Yaki point which we were trying to find. We never found that exact spot, so that was our joke every time we drove up to a spot we would say “Is this Yaki Point”. We about drove Wayne nuts saying this all the time. It’s still a fun thing for all of us if we can’t find where we are going we say “Is this Yaki Point”.

We then headed to the coast of California and the Pacific Ocean. We were trying to miss the big city, but oops we hit Los Angeles wide open. We pulled into a shopping center to seek help. The gentleman was very nice and helped us get back on track. We stayed the night at the State Park which was right on the ocean. The wind was blowing so hard we couldn’t put our pop-up camper all the way up. What we didn’t know until we got there was that we had the Pacific Ocean on one side of us , and the Amtrak train track and the Los Angeles freeway was on the other . That makes for one loud night. The kids loved playing on the rocks and ocean the next day.

We then headed back inland to stay at Las Vegas. We ate good food, went to Circus Circus, swam, and had a wonderful stay. We saw some little Road Runner birds, and they looked just like the one on TV. HaHa!

We came back through Vail, Colorado on the last week in July, and there was still snow on the mountains. People were fishing at the little river in winter clothes. It was magnificient. I would like to go back there some day to visit.

We hurried home from here, because our two weeks were almost gone. We have so many memories from this trip, and so many wonderful people we met. If you get the chance get out there and travel, because you will never regret it.

Things to Remember before you leave

Norma and I are planning a long cross country trip up to New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia this summer. We have a list of things to make sure we are prepared for the adventure. We are sharing with you so you might gain from our experience of the decades. Also we would LOVE to have your insight as to the “must have” items for your extended length trips.

We plan to be gone for 5-6 weeks so here are the items on our list of “remembers”…

  • Stop the mail. We don’t want a box full of mail when we return or worse have it stolen while we are away.
  • Medications – refill before you leave if you don’t have enough to last through the trip
  • Document for easy access. Insurance Numbers, Roadside Assistance Number, emergency contact numbers…. etc.
  • Extra cash for Toll Roads. Some states are going to a “photo & bill” system which makes traffic flow much better, but the costs are higher 🙁
  • Online or Printed copy of Reservations and phone numbers to the campgrounds
  • Keep a key to the camper/motor home outside somewhere DON’T GET LOCKED OUT! ( yes we have )
  • Check Fire Extinguishers, smoke alarms, gas leak detectors.
  • Have plenty of bottle waters for cooking and washing on the road. Potable water isn’t always sanitary for cooking. Also it’s easy to heat up in the microwave for a quick hair washing if boondocking for an overnight.
